Residents evacuated as fire rips through Westminster substation
Residents were evacuated as a fire ripped through a substation in Westminster, London.
Dramatic footage shows a thick plume of smoke billowing into the sky as emergency responders extinguish the blaze on Aberdeen Place in Maida Vale.
Fifteen fire trucks and more than 100 firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 5:30 am on Tuesday, April 29.
Station Commander Paul Morgan said: 'This is a very visible fire and producing lots of smoke. Residents are advised to keep their windows and doors shut and avoid the area where possible.'
Officials said that more than 100 residents were evacuated as flames spread to the roof of an adjacent residential building.
UK Power Networks confirmed that the blaze was caused by a fault in the equipment but assured that power supplies in the area were not affected. No injuries were reported.
The incident follows a series of recent substation fires in the UK, including the Heathrow Airport fire in March, which led to widespread outages.
