The Shinmoedake volcano emitted thick ash clouds in Japan, billowing across the surrounding area.

Footage shows volcanic dust rising 7,546 ft (2,300 m) above the crater amid the eruption at the Kirishima Mountains in Kagoshima, Kyushu, on September 3 at 11:26 a.m. local time.

In another clip, a nearby village can be seen with ash in the air, settling on parked cars.

Shinmoedake is one of Japan's most active and closely monitored volcanoes, with a history of explosive activity dating back to 1716.

On July 3, the volcano sent ash plumes approximately 16,404ft (5,000 m) into the atmosphere, dispersing ash to neighboring regions, including Jeju Island in South Korea.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has raised the volcanic alert level to 3 out of 5, advising the public to stay away from the crater due to the risk of large volcanic rocks and falling ash.
