On the afternoon of April 30, Yuncheng in Shanxi Province experienced a level 11 thunderstorm and gale, with wind gusts reaching 29.5 metres per second — breaking the city’s previous wind speed record. At 4:12 p.m., the Yuncheng Meteorological Observatory issued an upgraded yellow gale warning, forecasting average wind speeds of force 8–9 and gusts of force 10 or higher over the next 12 hours.

Violent winds swept through the area carrying dust and sand, plunging the surroundings into chaos. Rooftops were torn off multiple buildings, large trees were uprooted and crashed down on parked cars, and significant damage was done to power, communication, and agricultural infrastructure. Pedestrians struggled to stay on their feet, and some high-speed trains were delayed, severely impacting daily life and travel.

The full extent of the damage and any casualties is still being assessed.
