In the sprawling Kibera slum, residents could be seen engaged in small-scale trades—from blacksmithing and auto repairs to tailoring and street vending—to make ends meet. May 1, observed globally as International Workers’ Day or Labor Day, commemorates the historic struggle for workers' rights, including the eight-hour workday. The date traces its origins to the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago, where labor protests turned violent. While many countries mark the day with rallies and public holidays, low-income workers in nations like Kenya often continue working due to financial necessity.
