Caribbean Netherlands: Several arrested as violent protests erupt at Maersk HQ in the Netherlands
...ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS - MAY 14, 2025: Dozens of protesters from the activist group Geef Tegengas occupied the lobby of Maersk Line’s headquarters on Boompjes in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on Wednesday, May 14., accusing the global shipping giant of complicity in war crimes through its alleged transportation of weapons and weapon components to and from Israel. The demonstrators — aligned with the international campaign “Mask Off Maersk” — chained themselves to glass turnstiles and metal structures, blocking all entry and exit points. Some activists lay on the ground with their faces and bodies wedged between security gates, effectively shutting down access to the building for several hours. Maersk employees were unable to enter the premises, while some were still able to exit early in the day. The blockade caused significant disruption to the company’s operations. Police intervened in the demonstration, dismantling the blockade and arresting dozens of protesters, some of whom actively resisted removal. Tensions ran high, with brief clashes reported during the removal process. Maersk, a Danish multinational, is the world’s second-largest container shipping company, operating in 374 ports across 116 countries, with a workforce of over 100,000 employees as of 2024. This direct action is part of a wider international protest movement accusing Maersk of supporting military logistics related to Israel, while also criticizing the company’s broader role in climate change, child labor, and conflict zones. Organizers say the occupation sends a strong message: multinational corporations must be held accountable for their role in enabling global injustice.
