A group of teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of arson after a wildfire broke out at a popular hiking spot.

A 19-year-old man, an 18-year-old woman and a 17-year-old-girl were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and arson not endangering life after Rivington moors in Chorley, Lancs., caught fire.

Firefighters were called to the popular hiking spot at around 8pm on Tuesday (May 13) after reports from several members of the public that the beauty spot was on fire.

Around six fire engines were called to the scene and crews used drones in an attempt to tackle the blaze.

The wildfire has now stopped but firefighters were pictured yesterday (Wednesday) hosing down the grass.

The group have been bailed pending further enquiries but a fourth person, a 19-year-old woman, was arrested today on suspicion of criminal damage and arson not endangering life, and is currently in custody.

Anyone with information about the fire or who has dashcam footage from the area, is asked to contact 101 – quoting log 1486 of May 13.
