VARIOUS OF PROTESTERS HOLDING BANNERS, PALESTINIAN FLAGS/ CHANTING SLOGANS/ MARCHING PARIS, FRANCE - MAY 17: Thousands of pro-Palestine demonstrators gathered in Paris on Saturday, May 17, to mark the 77th anniversary of the Nakba and demand an end to Israel’s military actions in Gaza. The protest, organized under the banner of Nakba 77, commemorated what Palestinians refer to as the "Nakba" (Arabic for "catastrophe")—the mass displacement of over 750,000 Palestinians during the establishment of Israel in 1948. According to UN records, this event led to the permanent displacement of more than half of the Palestinian population. This year’s Nakba anniversary coincides with ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza, now in their 583rd day, which have caused what humanitarian organizations describe as an unprecedented crisis. For the second consecutive year, Palestinians in Gaza face severe shortages of food, medicine, and basic supplies amid continued bombardment. Protesters in Paris called on governments to halt all military and political support for Israel, chanting slogans such as "Free Palestine" and "Stop the Genocide." The Israeli government maintains that its military campaign targets Hamas militants, following the group’s October 7 attack that killed approximately 1,200 people in southern Israel. Palestinian authorities, however, report that more than 53,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in Gaza since the conflict began.
