SANTIAGO, CHILE - MAY 23, 2025: A group of 45 Chilean migrants arrived back in Santiago this week, following their return from the United States amid recent immigration law changes. The deportees were met at Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport by their relatives. Migrants had to turn back following the implementation of new US immigration regulations. Many had initially left their countries seeking better living conditions in the US. The US President Donald Trump escalated his hardline immigration rhetoric, claiming the U.S. has been "invaded" by 21 million undocumented immigrants and warning that the nation risks becoming a "CRIME-RIDDEN THIRD WORLD NATION" if deportations are not carried out. After returning to the White House this January, Trump announced the termination of the CBP One app, which provided legal pathways for immigration. Trump also ordered the preparation of a detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to hold up 30,000 migrants who are living illegally in the US. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the facility as "a perfect place" to detain deported migrants.
