8-year-old Palestinian girl suffers amputations after Israeli strike on tent
KHAN YOUNIS, PALESTINE - MAY 26, 2025: An 8-year-old Palestinian girl underwent amputation after being severely injured in an Israeli airstrike that hit a tent sheltering displaced families in Gaza, according to local health officials. Sila Mazi is currently under treatment at Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis, but she needs to be transferred to another hospital for better medical care. Sila’s right leg had to be amputated, and doctors fear her left leg may also require removal. The poor girl is not the only victim in her family. Her 18-year-old sister Rahaf also lost her left leg in the same attack, while their brother Mohammed sustained a severe shrapnel injury to his knee. Their mother, 42-year-old Nisrin, was also badly injured. She lost a finger and now faces the possibility of partial foot amputation due to her wounds. As Israeli airstrikes continue to pound the Gaza Strip, civilians — particularly women and children — remain the most affected. Gaza has been grappling with a deepening health and humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by Israel’s long-standing blockade and intensifying military operations, which have left hospitals overwhelmed and medical supplies in critical shortage. The Israeli army, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave. Reporting by Doaa Albaz // Writing by Mustafa Tuncer
