Austria: Ten Coati Cubs Climb Into Hearts At Vienna Zoo
Vienna, Austria - May 30, 2025 Vienna, Austria – A playful group of ten coati cubs is capturing hearts at Schönbrunn Zoo as they explore their lush outdoor enclosure with climbing skill and curiosity. Born in early March to three females and a newly arrived male, the cubs started life blind and deaf. At birth, each measured only around 10 centimeters from nose to rear, not counting their tails. For weeks, the cubs stayed in the indoor area. One experienced mother gathered them into a shared nest, and all the mothers began raising them together. Now, they are carried outside daily in their mothers’ mouths or toddle out on their own. Visitors can watch them investigate their surroundings and scramble up tree trunks. The father plays his part too. Acting as a guardian, he keeps a watchful eye on the group to ensure everyone stays together. White-nosed coatis come from South America's tropical forests, where they share their habitat with spectacled bears. At Schönbrunn Zoo, the two species have lived together since 2023. The enclosure, reopened in 2023, spans 1,400 square meters and includes thick vegetation and climbing structures that mimic their natural environment. “Coatis are climbing experts and very active during the day,” said Zoo Director Dr. Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck. “They’re omnivores. The young still nurse, but also eat insects, raw beef, boiled eggs, and fruit.” With noses to the ground searching for food and tails pointed skyward, the coati family provides a joyful sight for zoo visitors.
