This is the moment police captured a seven-foot alligator after it was found in a residential pool.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office in Florida responded to a call about an alligator spotted in a backyard pool in Jensen Beach on 31 May.

Deputy Dawn Ferris, Sergeant Crystal Nash and professional trapper Matt Hines arrived to find the large reptile lounging in the water.

Video shows the alligator thrashing and spinning before being dragged out.

Hines used an animal control pole to secure the gator around its mouth but each time he pulled it began spiralling in an effort to escape.

After a minute of struggle, Hines managed to remove the seven-foot alligator from the backyard.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office is urging residents to stay alert during alligator mating season as the animals are more active and may wander into unusual areas.
