Footage from Karachi city shows fishing boats and birds among piles of waste accumulated in and around the port. Waste pickers can also be seen gathering and separating recyclable materials from garbage dumps. World Environment Day in 2025 focus on ending plastic pollution. This year’s observance comes as countries make progress towards securing a global treaty to end plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. Plastic pollution intensifies the harmful effects of the triple planetary crisis—climate change, the degradation of nature and biodiversity, and widespread pollution and waste.
