Despite a recent decision preventing the public from performing animal sacrifices this year, Moroccans still performed the Eid prayer with great spiritual enthusiasm. With the first light of the morning, Moroccans dressed in their best festive clothes and flocked to mosques and open-air prayer grounds known as musalla to share the joy of Eid al-Adha together. In the sermon following the Eid prayer, the principles of monotheism (tawhid), piety (taqwa), submission, and benevolence (ihsan) were emphasized. The significance and meaning of Eid were explained through the story of Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail. The sermon also highlighted that Eid al-Adha strengthens worship, generosity, and family ties. Worshippers were reminded to spend the holiday with praises (takbir) and remembrance (dhikr) of Allah. In February, King Mohammed VI urged his fellow citizens not to slaughter sheep for Eid al-Adha, as he country is grappling with dwindling herds due to a six-year drought. It was announced during the sermon that King Mohammed VI of Morocco would offer a sacrifice on behalf of the people, due to ongoing drought and a decline in livestock numbers in the country. This decision was presented as being in line with Islam’s principle of ease and facilitation. A special prayer was dedicated to the people of Palestine and Gaza at the end of the sermon. During the sermon, some worshippers displayed Palestinian flags in a show of solidarity with Gaza. Following the Eid prayer, many Moroccans celebrated with their families while holding Palestinian flags and taking commemorative photos. As the congregation dispersed, a group gathered and chanted slogans such as “Freedom for Gaza” and “The people of Palestine are not alone.” The demonstration ended peacefully, highlighting the continued support of the Moroccan people for Palestine during the Eid celebrations.
