GENERAL VIEW OF STALLMANGOCHI, MALAWI - JUNE 9: In Malawi, one of the world’s poorest nations, local residents rely on traditional wood carving as a primary source of income. Without the use of modern machinery or tools, artisans in the southeastern city of Mangochi create detailed wooden models and handicrafts, which they sell in roadside stalls near tourist areas. Residents gather wood from the surrounding environment to carve miniature wooden replicas of vehicles and other handmade goods, all crafted entirely by hand. Alongside these artisanal products, vendors also offer everyday necessities such as bottled beverages, fruits and vegetables from wooden stalls set up along main roads. These roadside markets serve both local communities and visitors, providing essential goods and souvenirs. The sale of handcrafted wooden items not only reflects Malawi's rich cultural heritage but also remains a vital source of income for many families in the absence of industrial employment and economic infrastructure.
