Displaced civilians, journalists depart Gaza's Nasser hospital amid Israeli threats

HANI ALSHAER SPEAKING TO REPORTER (Arabic) KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - JUNE 12: Displaced Palestinians and journalists began evacuating Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis on Thursday, June 12, following Israeli military orders to immediately leave the area. As tensions escalated, families packed their tents and belongings under the looming threat of an invasion. Nasser Hospital, the last major functioning medical facility in southern Gaza, is now at risk of shutting down entirely due to nearby Israeli military operations and forced displacement orders. The hospital, which serves hundreds of thousands of people, is currently operating at 150% capacity, with 540 beds overwhelmed by patients, including 51 in intensive care who face life-threatening risks if services collapse. Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) issued an urgent call for the protection of the hospital, its patients, and medical staff. "The forced displacement orders and nearby attacks threaten to push Nasser Hospital out of service completely," the organization warned. As of 3 p.m. local time on June 12, Israeli forces reportedly positioned tanks and troops near the hospital, raising fears of an imminent assault. In recent days, the facility has struggled with a surge in casualties, many from attacks near aid distribution points supported by the U.S. and Israeli military. The World Health Organization's (WHO) director-general on Friday, June 6, expressed concern over the collapsing health system in Gaza, saying two other hospitals are "at risk of becoming non-functional." "Gaza’s health system is collapsing, with Nasser Medical Complex -- the most important referral hospital left -- and Al-Amal Hospital at risk of becoming non-functional," Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on X. He warned that without Nasser Medical Complex and Al-Amal Hospital people will lose access to health services. The Israeli army, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing over 55,200 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
