GAZA, PALESTINE - JULY 31: The director of Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza said the facility is overwhelmed with casualties from Israeli strikes targeting displaced Palestinians gathered for humanitarian aid.

Atef al-Hout, speaking in a video released by Gaza’s Health Ministry on Thursday, warned the region’s health system is nearing collapse amid intensifying Israeli attacks.

“We’re seeing around 100 new casualties every day from these strikes,” al-Hout said. Most of the patients require urgent surgical procedures and other critical care, he added.

Al-Hout also said medical teams are struggling to treat the wounded due to severe shortages of supplies, blaming Israel’s ongoing blockade that has blocked even basic humanitarian shipments.

Nasser Hospital remains the only major medical facility still operating in the southern Gaza Strip, al-Hout said. Several field hospitals have been set up to help handle the influx of patients, but he stressed they are far from enough to meet soaring needs.

The call came as Israel’s military continues to target areas crowded with displaced residents, deepening the humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave.

The Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, killing over 60,200 Palestinians. The relentless bombardment has devastated the enclave and led to food shortages.

On Monday, Israeli rights groups B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, citing the systematic destruction of Palestinian society and the deliberate dismantling of the territory’s healthcare system.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
