Famed for its volcanic “blue” lake and thermal “green” lake — each colored by algae and mineral deposits — the caldera offers a changing spectacle with each season. Situated at an altitude of 2,250 meters, the site is home to diverse bird species, brown bears, endemic plants, an ice cave, and a steam vent, making it a popular destination for both local and international visitors seeking a retreat from urban life. Its dramatic landscape and ecological richness earned it the “Excellence Award” from the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) project. Local authorities are working to include Nemrut Caldera in UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network, a move expected to further boost regional tourism.
