Animal rights protesters hit Man City game at Club World Cup
Animal rights protesters disrupted a Manchester City match during the Club World Cup, drawing attention with their dramatic demonstration.
Two activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) stormed the pitch during the match between Wydad Casablanca and Man City on Wednesday, June 18.
Footage shows one of the demonstrators running across the field holding a protest sign, while match officials gave chase at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
The banner read 'Morocco – Stop Shooting Dogs and Cats!' in protest against the reported mass killing of stray animals in Morocco ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The pair were swiftly tackled and removed from the ground in front of thousands of stunned spectators.
PETA Executive President Tracy Reiman said: 'Dogs are being gunned down, set on fire, and killed in other horrific ways simply for the sake of a soccer tournament.'
The group condemned Morocco for allegedly failing to uphold a 2019 royal decree issued by King Mohammed VI banning the killing of stray animals. PETA claims the agreement has collapsed, and widespread cruelty continues.
They said homeless dogs and cats are being shot, poisoned, and caged without food or water, only to be left to die.
PETA is now urging FIFA to intervene and halt what it calls a mass slaughter being carried out in the tournament's name.
The organisation has also appealed to Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, known for his love of dogs, to help fund spay and neuter initiatives in Morocco using part of his income.
