Spain: Thousands protest in Madrid against Israel's actions in Gaza, call for end to ‘genocide’
MADRID, SPAIN (JUNE 20, 2025) (ANADOLU-ACCESS ALL) MADRID, SPAIN - JUNE 20: Thousands of demonstrators marched through Madrid on Friday, June 20, dressed in red and demanding an immediate end to Israel’s military operations in Gaza, which they labeled as "genocide." The protest, organized by Spanish far-left NGOs under the European-wide campaign "Draw the Red Line," called on governments to take stronger action against Israel’s offensive in Gaza and its occupation of Palestinian territories. Protesters gathered at Cybele Square before marching to Spanish Square, chanting slogans such as "Free Palestine," "Netanyahu the Killer," and "No to Genocide." Representatives from participating NGOs accused Israel of committing "20 months of brutal genocide against the Palestinian people" and criticized European governments for their "complicity through silence." They urged an immediate end to all cooperation with Israel, particularly arms trade agreements. Demonstrators expressed frustration over Europe’s perceived inaction. "We are tired of Europe’s silence. Sanctions must be imposed on Israel," said protester Maria Rodriguez in an interview with Anadolu. Another participant, Nur Fernandez, noted that while some European officials, like EU High Representative Josep Borrell, have begun acknowledging Israel’s actions as genocide, "it’s not enough. We will keep pressuring politicians to act." The demonstration was attended by Ione Belarra, leader of the left-wing Podemos party, along with several Spanish lawmakers.
