New York, United States - June 21, 2025 Pigeons took center stage in New York this week at the High Line’s Pigeon Fest. The event celebrated the city’s iconic bird with a quirky pageant where impersonators competed for the title of “top pigeon.” The festival, held on National Pigeon Appreciation Day, drew crowds to see Iván Argote’s 17-foot-tall pigeon statue, “Dinosaur,” at 30th Street and 10th Avenue. Dozens of New Yorkers donned feathered costumes, strutting and cooing to impress judges. Contestants were judged on plumage, strut, and coo. One standout, “Carrie Beakshaw,” performed a monologue, while others pecked at bread. Miriam Abrahams, a Wild Bird Fund volunteer, won the crown for her stellar performance. A 13-year-old attendee, Athena, told reporters, “Pigeons are beautiful and fun to learn about. What’s not to love?” The event highlighted the bird’s overlooked charm and its place in New York’s urban ecology. Artist Iván Argote called pigeons an “icon of the margins,” noting their cultural significance. The festival also featured a small pigeon in a red bow tie, delighting onlookers and adding to the festive vibe. Pigeon Fest showcased New York’s love-hate relationship with its feathered residents, blending art, nature, and community in a celebration of the city’s unsung avian mascot.
