The Iron Dome is not responsible for intercepting the ballistic missiles that Iran has been launching at Israel, a former US Air Force intelligence officer Travis Hawley told Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper on Thursday. According to Hawley, Israel's first line of defense against ballistic missile threats lies with the Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 systems. The Iron Dome, he explained, is designed to intercept short-range threats and only serves as a backup if the Arrow systems fail. Hostilities broke out June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes on several sites across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory strikes. Israeli authorities said at least 25 people have been killed and hundreds injured since then in Iranian missile attacks. Meanwhile, in Iran, 430 people have been killed and more than 3,500 wounded in the Israeli assault, according to the Iranian Health Ministry.
