Organized by the group “Information Workers for Gaza,” the event honored 226 journalists, photojournalists, and cameramen who lost their lives while reporting on Israeli attacks. Participants held photos of the slain journalists, taped their mouths shut in symbolic protest, and read aloud the victims’ names, roles, and the circumstances of their deaths. A large display listing all the names was also featured. Speakers at the vigil condemned Israel’s restrictions on press access in Gaza, criticizing the targeting of Palestinian journalists and their families, despite Israel’s self-description as the region’s “only democracy.” Demonstrators stressed that those wearing “Press” vests should be protected, not targeted, and said that much of the information reaching the world about Gaza has come at the cost of the lives of over 200 journalists. Since the start of the Israeli onslaught on Gaza, Palestinian journalists have faced extreme risks to their lives, with dozens killed during field coverage, despite wearing press vests and operating from well-known locations. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 56,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
