Caribbean Netherlands: Memorial in Netherlands pays tribute to children, journalists killed in Gaza
-MAASTRICHT, THE NETHERLANDS — OCT. 11, 2025: Demonstrators placed children's shoes and photographs in front of the Basilica of Saint Servatius in Maastricht, the Netherlands, on Saturday, Oct. 11, to honor the memories of Gazan children and journalists killed in Israeli attacks. The event, organized by the Plant een Olijfboom (Plant an Olive Tree) Foundation, drew large crowds who laid thousands of children’s shoes in remembrance. During the ceremony, the names and ages of children killed in Israeli strikes were read aloud. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas agreed to the first phase of a 20-point plan he laid out on Sept. 29 to bring a ceasefire to Gaza, release all Israeli captives being held there in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the entire Gaza Strip. Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed nearly 67,200 Palestinians in the enclave, most of them women and children, and rendered it uninhabitable.
