SHOTLIST: UNITED STATES (JUNE 25, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. MOTION GRAPHIC VIDEO SHOWING HEAT MAP OF UNITED STATES WHERE EXTREME HEAT WAVE WILL AFFECTUNITED STATES - JUNE 25, 2025: A rare and dangerous heat wave has spread across the eastern United States, placing more than 160 million people under heat alerts as major cities brace for record-breaking temperatures exceeding 100°F (38°C). According to the National Weather Service (NWS), extreme heat warnings are in effect from the Southeast to the Northeast, including Washington, D.C., New York, Philadelphia, and Boston. Heat index values in some areas are expected to surpass 110°F (43°C) due to high humidity levels. The NWS said Tuesday could mark one of the hottest days on record for several cities along the Interstate-95 corridor. Officials warned that the intense heat poses a significant risk, particularly to the elderly, young children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. In Boston, the temperature reached 102°F (39°C), breaking a June record. In Newark, New Jersey, temperatures climbed to 103°F (39.4°C), tying the city’s all-time June high. Meanwhile, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore also recorded highs of 102°F (38.8°C). The heat wave is also impacting the Midwest and Great Plains, where cities such as Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City have experienced highs between 95°F and 110°F (35 °C and 43°C) in recent days. Authorities have opened cooling centers in major cities and urged residents to limit outdoor activities during peak hours. “If you feel overheated or dizzy, seek shade or air conditioning immediately,” the NWS advised. In St. Louis, one heat-related fatality was reported after a person was found unresponsive outdoors. Emergency services are on alert across the affected states. A high-pressure system is causing the extreme temperatures, often referred to as a “heat dome,” trapping hot air over much of the central and eastern US. Officials said the heat wave is expected to ease in some regions later this week, but dangerously high temperatures may persist through midweek in others. The Washington Monument was temporarily closed on Tuesday due to unsafe conditions caused by the extreme heat. Writing by Berkay Gur
