Istanbul, Türkiye - June 30, 2025 Clashes broke out in Istanbul on Monday after protests escalated over an alleged depiction of Prophet Muhammad in a cartoon published by the satirical magazine LeMan. Police used rubber bullets and teargas to disperse crowds gathered outside the magazine's office. The unrest followed an arrest order from Istanbul’s chief prosecutor against the editors of LeMan, accusing them of "publicly insulting religious values." The magazine’s editor-in-chief, Tuncay Akgün, firmly denied the allegations, saying the cartoon had been deliberately misinterpreted. “This cartoon is not a caricature of Prophet Muhammad in any way,” Akgün told AFP. “The name Muhammad was used in the work, fictionalizing a victim of Israeli bombardments. Over 200 million people in the Islamic world are named Muhammad.”
