Mother hare saves her baby from attacking magpie during nursing
I filmed this rare wildlife encounter in my garden in Tampere, Finland in my backyard, on June 10, 2025, using an iPhone 15. In the video, a brown hare mother is peacefully nursing her baby on the lawn when a magpie suddenly attacks and grabs the baby in its beak. The mother reacts instantly and manages to rescue her baby, pulling it back to safety. Remarkably, the nursing continues as if nothing happened.
This is an exceptional piece of wildlife behavior caught on camera:
- A hare nursing its young is rarely seen in itself.
- The surprise magpie attack and the mother’s defensive reaction make it a unique and dramatic moment.
The sequence is clear, emotionally powerful, and needs no narration to convey the intensity of the situation.
