Gazan boy loses leg in Israeli airstrike while seeking food from aid site backed by U.S., Israel
GAZA, PALESTINE - JULY 12, 2025: Ten-year-old Palestinian child Mohammed Muslih lost one of his legs in an Israeli attack while accompanying his father to a humanitarian aid distribution point in Gaza in search of food. Since May 27, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed and thousands injured at the so-called humanitarian aid distribution points established through the “Gaza Humanitarian Aid Foundation,” which is backed by the United States and Israel. Mohammed’s father, Omar, stated that Palestinians are forced to take such risks at these sites because there are no places in Gaza where they can safely obtain food. "Mohammed used to help me, bringing water, going to the charity kitchens, collecting wood, or he used to go to the sea to play with the other kids," Omar said, adding that he has now lost his helper. “Sometimes I call for his help,” he added, “and then I remember — he lost his leg in that airstrike.” “Israel deprived us of our childhood. We lost our friends, our schools were bombed, there are no shops left to buy anything, and there’s no food,” said the injured boy, tearfully expressing his sorrow over losing both his leg and his beloved cousin. Mohammed expressed his wish to receive treatment abroad and to be able to play like other children again. Since May 27, the number of aid seekers killed by Israeli fire has risen to 809, with 5,249 others wounded, according to Gaza officials. At least 41 people remain missing, the Gaza government’s media office said in a statement issued Thursday. The so-called "Gaza Humanitarian Aid Foundation" backed by the U.S. and Israel, has been criticized by Palestinian officials and international observers as a death trap. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, killing over 57,800 Palestinians so far, most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has destroyed the enclave and led to food shortages and the spread of diseases. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Reporting by Gulsen Topcu, Anas Zeyad Fteha // Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
