United States - July 15, 2025 On July 14, the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) opened four floodgates at Buchanan Dam for the first time since May 2019. This coordinated action addresses significant water inflows resulting from recent flooding across the Highland Lakes system. Drone footage taken over the past few days shows floodgates operating at Buchanan Dam, Wirtz Dam, and Starcke Dam as the LCRA manages water levels in response to the heavy rains. Lakes Buchanan and Travis are designed to fill during major weather events, underscoring the need to remain flood-ready in Central Texas’ Flash Flood Alley. “Our thoughts remain with those affected by this devastating flood,” the authority said.
