Thai police file sedition case against Cambodian dictator over leaked phone call with Thai PM
Thai police have filed a sedition case against Cambodian dictator Hun Sen over his leaked phone call with suspended Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
The Cyber Crime Investigation Division 1 submitted the 50-page case file to the Office of the Attorney General in Bangkok on Monday, July 14.
The filing was based on a complaint lodged by Somkid Chueakong, deputy secretary-general to the Thai Prime Minister, who accused Hun Sen of threatening Thailand's national security through social media.
Citing the 17-minute audio clip of the botched call, Somkid claimed the Facebook post could constitute multiple offences, including sedition and violations under the Computer Crime Act.
Police Major General Siriwat Deepor, commander of the Cyber Crime Investigation Division 1, said: 'The submission of the findings to the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is part of the procedure for handling an offence committed outside Thai territory. It is up to the OAG to decide whether an arrest warrant should be issued.'
He added that they will seek an Interpol Red Alert for Hun Sen's arrest should the OAG determine that a warrant was needed.
Embattled Thai premier Paetongtarn was suspended by Thailand's Constitutional Court on July 1, over a leaked phone call with Khmer Rouge slayer Hun Sen in June.
She had appeared overly deferential, calling Hun Sen 'uncle' as she blamed a rogue Thai army general for the rising territorial tensions with neighbouring Cambodia.
She is reportedly being investigated for alleged ethics violations in another blow to her already faltering administration.
