This is the dramatic moment a rowdy backpacker was attacked by angry locals for refusing to be quiet on a late-night train in Thailand.

The allegedly drunk man began arguing with his Thai wife while fellow passengers were trying to sleep in the fan sleeper carriage headed to Bangkok at around 1 am local time, on January 13.

The wife stormed out on her beliggerent husband, who then reportedly smashed the train window, cracking the glass and cutting his hand.

He was said to have hurled expletives and claimed 'Cambodia is better than Thailand' when Thai passengers and crew ignored his demands to be brought alcohol.

The tourist's outburst continued for 20 minutes before railway staff arrived to calm him down. But the bespectacled commuter refused to cooperate before allegedly attacking personnel.

Shocking footage shows the backpacker, seen wearing a red shirt, suddenly punching the crew in the face as they tried to restrain him.

Fellow passengers, who had been bottling up their frustration, then lunged at him from across the cramped carriage, pummeling him with a barrage of blows as onlookers shouted 'go for it, go for it'.

As staff kicked the couple out at the Bang Saphan Station, the husband was livestreaming himself, yelling at locals: 'You are sick! You are sick! You are a small piece of sh**!'

Bizarrely, his Thai wife also joined in insulting her fellow countrymen.

Passenger Jampee Hanprated said: 'The foreigner and his Thai wife boarded at Chumphon station. They were drunk, muttering and arguing, and smashing the train windows. The wife got up and left, but the foreigner continued to yell and become increasingly violent.

'We were scared, so we asked one of the men to get staff, but they couldn't because our carriage was a sleeper car and the doors were locked. When the wife returned, she still wouldn't stop yelling. My colleague checked the phone number on the train ticket and called the staff.

'Shortly after, they arrived and spoke to the man politely but he continued to make obscene gestures and insult Thai people, raising his middle finger and saying that all the people in the carriage were terrible. He even made a thumbs-down gesture saying 'Cambodia is very good.'

'When the staff tried to stop him, he punched one of them. My colleagues in purple shirts, who were sitting near him, couldn't stand it anymore and helped the staff, giving him a few punches to teach him a lesson before asking him to get off at Bang Saphan station.'

The couple reportedly boarded the night train at Chumphon Station, a transit hub for tourists heading to popular holiday islands such as Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Koh Phangan.

Upon arrival, visitors can catch buses and vans to take them to nearby piers, where they can board ferries to their destination.

Tourists returning from island trips can also take overnight trains to the capital Bangkok, with train services available from 7:36 pm to 2:30 am, though only two trains have air-conditioned sleeper berths.

The State Railway of Thailand currently operates a fleet with a wide range of ages and conditions, which is largely divided between older Japanese or Korean rolling stock and modern Chinese carriages.

Many standard third-class and older second-class carriages have been in service for more than 50 years.
