Rescue teams were still searching for a missing passenger from a capsized boat in Indonesia.

A small motorised vessel carrying seven people sank in the Asue River estuary, Atsj District, Asmat Regency, on Tuesday.

Six of the occupants managed to swim to safety and were rescued by local fishermen. One man, identified as Abraham Aitu, 50, remains missing.

The boat had reportedly departed from Sogoni Village when the incident occurred. The Asmat Search and Rescue post received the report on Wednesday morning from Police Water Unit chief Pak Rizeth.

Wagianto, Coordinator of the Asmat Search and Rescue Post, said: 'During the journey, the ketinting boat was hit by waves and swept away by strong currents at the mouth of the Asue River, precisely between Amanamkai Village and Bipim Village, until it finally sank.'

Timika Search and Rescue head I Wayan Suyatna immediately dispatched a joint SAR team, including Asmat rescuers, Indonesian Navy personnel, and police, aboard Speed Boat 85 to search the area.

Footage shows emergency responders departing the riverbank to locate the missing resident.

Authorities have urged locals and river users to exercise caution during rough weather and turbulent waters.
