China: Rare albino brown bear spotted foraging with cubs in Xinjiang
A rare albino brown bear and two cubs were spotted foraging in the northern mountainous area of Luntai County, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, on Friday. The family crossed shrublands, climbed cliffs, and played during their journey. The white-furred female bear shook head, then turned urgently to check on her cinnamon cubs. After regrouping, the female bear led them through bushes before scaling cliffs with astonishing ease along narrow paths. When the bear paused to sniff for food, the cubs climbed onto her back in playful mischief. Seemingly overwhelmed, the female bear soon ushered them away. This was the first time an albino brown bear has been spotted since wildlife monitoring began in 2012 in the area, which is home to mainly brown bears, wolves, and marmots. Brown bears typically have brown or gray fur, making the albino variant exceptionally rare.
