INTERVIEW WITH HER FATHER, RAHIM, WHO WATCHED HIS DAUGHTER WASTE AWAY UNDER ISRAEL’S SIEGE 3. RAHIL’S BODY BEING TRANSPORTED FOR BURIALGAZA, PALESTINE - JULY 22: The ongoing Israeli siege on Gaza has claimed yet another life — this time that of a 32-year-old disabled woman whose body wasted away from starvation. Rahil Mohammed Rusrus, who had special needs, died at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in southern Gaza after weeks of severe malnutrition and dehydration. According to her grieving father, Rahim, Rahil’s weight had dropped from 50 kilograms to just 25 kilograms over the past month. “She could barely swallow,” her father recalled, his voice shaking. “The last thing she ate was two spoonfuls of lentil water I had managed to soak. That was her final meal on this earth.” This is not the first tragedy to hit the family. One of Rahil’s siblings was killed earlier by Israeli gunfire. “Of my four children, one has died of hunger, another died in an Israeli attack,” Rahim said. His remaining two children both have Down syndrome, and his fear now knows no limits. “Now I’m afraid not only that my children might die from bombs, but that they might die from hunger too,” he said. “The world has turned its back on us, closed its eyes to our suffering,” the father added bitterly. “No one sees what is happening to us.” Israel has imposed a tightened blockade on Gaza, pushing hundreds of thousands into starvation. Rahil’s death is yet another devastating symbol of the human cost of this siege — a life cut short not by bullets or bombs, but by hunger. Israel has killed more than 59,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in the Gaza Strip since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, collapsed the health system, and led to severe food shortages. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
