VARIOUS OF PEOPLE HOLDING BANNERS WAVING PALESTINIAN FLAGSTIRANA, ALBANIA - JULY 23, 2025: Hundreds of people gathered at Skanderbeg Square in Albania’s capital, Tirana, on Wednesday, July 23, to denounce Israel’s actions in Gaza and show support for Palestinians. Protestors held Palestinian flags and banners reading “Free Palestine”, “Stop the genocide in Gaza”, “Foods not bombs”, “Save Gaza now”, and “Albania stands with Palestine”. Among them was Swedish climate activist and human rights advocate Greta Thunberg, who addressed the crowd. Thunberg criticized the international community’s silence regarding what she described as an ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza, and said: “Israel has systematically destroyed bakeries, fertile land, and made it impossible for Gazans to even fish in their own waters and get food.” She called the situation a genocide fueled by global indifference. Since March 2, Israel has enforced a total blockade on Gaza, barring entry of food, medicine and humanitarian aid. Aid agencies have repeatedly warned of a man-made famine, with no sign of easing. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, killing nearly 59,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has destroyed the enclave and led to food shortages and a spread of disease. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
