KOSTAS SPEAKING TO REPORTERKRIONERI, GREECE - JULY 27, 2025: A wildfire that broke out on Saturday in Krioneri, a district in the Attiki Region of Greece that includes the capital Athens,which is under the influence of desert heat, caused damage to several houses. The flames, which spread into residential areas, resulted in significant damage to some properties. Aircraft and numerous firefighting teams were dispatched to combat the fire, and the flames were brought under control hours later. Kostas, a local resident whose house narrowly escaped the fire, spoke to Anadolu and said, “My house didn’t burn, but it came very close. Some of my neighbors’ houses were damaged. The absence of a fire truck belonging to the Krioneri Municipality is a major shortcoming. At least it would have been possible for a municipal vehicle to start responding until the fire department vehicles arrived.” Kostas also noted that such fires begin almost every year in grassy areas and he stressed that the municipality needs to take permanent measures. Meanwhile, wildfires continue to burn on the island of Chios and in the Messinia region of the Peloponnese Peninsula.
