Storyline: Summer vacationers flock to hottest place in China [Voice_over] It might seem counter intuitive during summer, but trips to the hottest place in China are well, heating-up this year. The destination is The Flaming Mountains of Turpan city in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which is known as "the land of fire." Tourists can visit the world's largest thermometer -- "Jin Gu Bang" – which displays real-time surface temperatures that can reach over 60 degrees Celsius during the day. They can also try camel riding or visit an underground palace exhibition to learn about the history of the barren red sandstone hills. And then there are the sand-baked eggs, a specialty in the region, which some people say have a bar-be-que taste. [Sound_bite] Zhang Xianxi, tourist: "I think this is truly amazing -- the ground temperature can actually get this high! The eggs baked in the sand here with scorching sunlight aren't dry or hard to eat. They're quite tender, and with the seasoning, it's just like eating barbecue." [Voice_over] For local tourists, the Flaming Mountains are perhaps best known for their depiction in the Chinese classic novel Journey to the West. In that story, the mountains are described as blazing with flames, which keeps the region scorching hot year-round, and prevents anything from growing, even a single blade of grass.
