Yokohama, Japan - August 04, 2025 A fire broke out on a launch barge during the Minato Mirai Smart Festival 2025, forcing the cancellation of the fireworks show and prompting a rapid rescue response. The incident took place just before 8:00 p.m. local time in Yokohama’s Naka Ward. The Japan Coast Guard reported that five crew members jumped into the sea from the burning barge and were safely rescued. Footage filmed by X user あべむつき@ラッキーマイン shows the aftermath of the fire. They said: “The Minatomirai fireworks can be seen from my house, but they were canceled due to a fire breaking out, and this is how it looks now. I sincerely hope there are no casualties.” Eyewitnesses and NHK video showed flames continuing to engulf the barge as late as 8:30 p.m. Fireworks on board were seen igniting and exploding sporadically. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze. Officials are examining safety protocols and the origin of the fire.
