Los Angeles, United States - November 23, 2025 11/22/2025 08:00 pm GMT-0800 BURBANK, Calif. – Burbank Police Department K-9 Officer Spike was shot and killed Saturday evening during an incident that later led to a lengthy police standoff with the suspected shooter, who was ultimately fatally shot by law enforcement. He was transported to the Burbank Animal Shelter for emergency treatment, but sources told Key News Network he did not survive his injuries. Following the shooting of the K-9, officers began searching for the suspect, which initiated a prolonged standoff that started on the Buena Vista Street on-ramp to the northbound I-5. The suspect fled along the wash area, moving between the freeway sound wall and the wash, and stopping in a neighborhood at Tulare and Naomi Street. According to the Burbank PD, the suspect was seen still armed with a handgun. Officers had utilized fire hoses to flood the wash in an attempt to draw out the suspect, who was hiding. The incident transitioned into a joint agency operation involving the Burbank and Glendale Police Departments, with additional police and K-9 units, crisis negotiators, and the Burbank Police Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT). The Burbank PD said in a news release that officers made efforts to communicate with the suspect, encouraging him to surrender peacefully. The area was contained before less lethal systems were deployed in an attempt to persuade the suspect to surrender. According to the Burbank PD, the suspect began shooting at police officers and striking police vehicles parked nearby. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the handgun was recovered. The incident initially unfolded around 6:40 p.m. when Burbank PD officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop in the 2400 block of Buena Vista Street near the northbound I-5 on-ramp. According to the Burbank PD, that's when a passenger fled from the vehicle and ran up the on-ramp. Officers believed he was armed. Back-up was requested as the officers remained with the driver and the car. Additional resources responded, including a police helicopter and a police K-9, to search for the suspect. During the search, the K-9 located the suspect, who fired multiple rounds, fatally striking the police dog before fleeing on foot. The hours-long incident concluded shortly before midnight. No additional officers or community members were injured. The Burbank PD has yet to identify the suspect. The investigation is ongoing.
