Fort Lauderdale, United States - August 05, 2025 Firefighters in Fort Lauderdale sprang into action Tuesday morning to save a dog trapped in a canal in the Sweeting Park area near Northwest 23rd Avenue. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to a 911 call reporting the stranded dog unable to find a way out of the water. Firefighter Mason McConchie said, "I'm sure a few minutes before we got there, she was probably on the brink of drowning. Glad we didn't have to see that." Firefighters entered the canal and carefully brought the dog back to dry land. One firefighter told WPLG-TV, "It's just the right thing to do. We had to get this dog out of the water. I took my shoes off to go grab her." After the rescue, the dog was scanned for a microchip. Officials contacted the former owner, learning the dog was adopted in 2018 but rehomed a few months later when the family moved to St. Cloud. The original owner chose to drive three hours to Fort Lauderdale to reclaim the dog.
