Qatar: Qatar to hold mediation talks with Hamas, Türkiye over U.S. proposal
Storyline: Qatar said on Tuesday that it will hold mediation talks with Hamas and Türkiye over a U.S.-proposed peace plan for Gaza. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari told reporters in Doha that Turkish representatives are set to take part in a meeting of the Gaza mediation team later in the day, while Hamas officials study the plan put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump. He said that Hamas officials had received the full U.S. plan late Monday night and promised to responsibly examine it. On Monday, Trump said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had agreed to his newly-proposed 20-point Gaza peace plan. Trump added that, if Hamas accepted the proposal, it would require the release of all remaining hostages within 72 hours and called on the group to accept the terms. Al-Ansari said that although it is still too early to predict the outcome of the Gaza ceasefire negotiations, Qatar is optimistic about reaching an agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologized to Qatar on Monday for a recent airstrike on Doha, a rare concession seen as crucial for the Gulf state to continue its key mediation role in the Gaza conflict. The apology came during a trilateral phone call among Netanyahu, Trump and Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani. According to a statement from Qatar's Foreign Ministry, Netanyahu expressed regret over the incident and pledged that such an event would not recur. On September 9, Israel carried out airstrikes on Doha, claiming they targeted senior Hamas leaders based in the city. Hamas said its delegation was in Doha at the time to discuss a U.S.-brokered ceasefire proposal. The strikes killed five Palestinians and one Qatari security officer, drawing widespread international condemnation. "Obviously, we still maintain some rights when it comes to legal action, especially on behalf of the families. But for the time being, I don't have any updates on our actions that we have taken. Some of these actions have already been concluded, like the emergency session of the Security Council, which came out with a statement, [and] the statement that came out of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. Others were in preliminary stages such as our talks with the ICC (International Criminal Court) and ICJ (The International Court of Justice)," said Al-Ansari at the press conference in Doha. Qatar has been a key mediator in the Gaza conflict, working alongside Egypt, the United States and other regional players to push for a ceasefire, humanitarian access and a long-term political settlement.
