India: Witnesses recall massive crowd, chaos at moment of deadly stampede in southern India
Storyline: Witnesses on Tuesday recalled an overcrowded rally and a chaotic scene at the moment of a deadly stampede that occurred on Saturday in southern India. At least 41 people had been killed and more than 100 others injured in the stampede which broke out on Saturday evening during a political rally of actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar (who uses the mononym Vijay) in Karur district, about 387 km southwest of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu. According to officials, among the 41 killed, 18 were women and 10 were children. On Tuesday, the scene of the stampede was still strewn with shoes and debris. Two Karur residents told China Global Television Network (CGTN) that the rally attracted a large crowd before the stampede occurred. "It was a narrow area. Even there is no space at all, and there were vehicles at that place also. Even there was no space for stand. At that time, the incident happened," said Naveen Kumar, a witness. "What can one do at that time? People were running for their life. And many just fell to the ground," said Prabhakaran, another witness. Vijay was campaigning for his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party ahead of local elections scheduled early next year. Shotlist: Karur, India - Sept 30, 2025: 1.
