SWEDISH ACTIVIST SIGYN MEDER SPEAKING TO REPORTER STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - AUGUST 9: Hundreds of people gathered in Sweden’s capital on Saturday to protest against what they described as the Israeli government’s plans to occupy Gaza and displace Palestinians. Demonstrators assembled in the Odenplan area, carrying signs reading “Zionist Israel, get out of Palestine,” “Killer US, get out of the Middle East,” “No to genocide,” and “Zionism will be defeated, resistance will win.” The crowd chanted slogans such as “Freedom for Palestine, no to Netanyahu’s plan” before marching to the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Swedish activist Sigyn Meder told that the situation in Palestine was “the most horrific thing” she had ever witnessed, and criticised the Swedish government for remaining silent. She said that children were being deliberately killed or maimed and that schools and hospitals were being bombed. She added that she was ashamed of the government for not ending arms deals with Israel or imposing sanctions. Israel’s Security Cabinet approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan early Friday to fully occupy Gaza City. Israel has faced mounting outrage for its destructive war against Gaza, where more than 61,000 victims have been killed since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the verge of famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
