FRIEND OF DECEASED PALESTINIAN CHILD MUHANNAD ZAKARIA EID SPEAKING TO REPORTER (Arabic) AND WALKING AWAY FROM CEMETERYGAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - AUGUST 9: Humanitarian aid airdrops over the Gaza Strip turned tragic on Saturday, Aug. 9, after a falling crate killed a boy, as desperate civilians scrambled for food and supplies amid Israel’s tightened blockade and ongoing military offensive. Eyewitnesses reported that parachuted aid packages landed west of the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, drawing large crowds in a chaotic rush for scarce food and relief items. One aid crate struck and killed a child, Muhannad Zakaria Eid, underscoring the perilous conditions faced by Palestinians struggling to access aid. The body was taken from Al-Awda Hospital in the Nuseirat refugee camp for funeral prayers before being carried to burial, as relatives mourned. Despite the risks, some residents managed to retrieve portions of the delivered supplies. However, the sporadic airdrops—often uncoordinated and hazardous—fall far short of addressing Gaza’s catastrophic shortages. The enclave faces near-total collapse of basic services, widespread famine, and severe shortages of food, water, and medicine due to Israel’s prolonged closure of crossings and restrictions on ground aid deliveries. International organizations have repeatedly warned of an escalating humanitarian disaster, with over 2.3 million Palestinians trapped under dire conditions. At least 61,369 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023, the Health Ministry said on Saturday. The ministry also noted that 21 Palestinians were killed and over 341 injured while trying to get humanitarian aid in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed while seeking aid to 1,743, with over 12,590 others wounded since May 27. The ministry reported that 11 people, including children, have died in the past 24 hours due to famine and malnutrition. This brings the total death toll from starvation to 212, among them 98 children, as the humanitarian crisis in the enclave deepens.
