VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — What looked like a lifeless horseshoe crab on the shore turned out to be a discarded shell — and the crab itself was very much alive.

Horseshoe crabs, ancient creatures more closely related to spiders and scorpions than true crabs, grow by molting. After crawling out of their old exoskeletons, they leave the empty shells behind, often fooling beachgoers into thinking the animal has died. A slit near the front of the shell marks where the crab emerged.

This particular crab, spotted at Virginia Beach, eventually made its way back to the waves with a little help from the surf.
