Mourners gathered in Gaza City on Monday for the funeral of five Al Jazeera staff members who were killed in an overnight Israeli strike on Sunday. People stood in the courtyard of the Al-Shifa hospital to mourn the deaths of 28-year-old Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif and four of his colleagues. A journalist depicted the horrific moment when the Israeli forces targeted them in the strike. "What happened that night was that I was in a tent next to the one that was targeted. Suddenly, we heard the sound of an explosion and saw flames erupting. My colleagues around me were injured, and I suffered bruises while trying to escape. I found my tent filled with shrapnel," said Amer Al-Sultan, a Palestinian journalist. Condemning Israel's repeated targeting of journalists, Gaza journalists are now calling for justice for those killed in the conflict. "This crime adds to a long record of crimes committed against Palestinian journalism. Since October 7 (2023), more than 230 journalists have been killed in the largest massacre ever committed against the press. Never before in any local or international conflict, or even during the First or Second World War, has such a large number of journalists been killed," said Ahed Farwana, Secretary of Palestinian Journalists Syndicate. "This is another crime. We are now paying the price for keeping Gaza's voice loud and for the screens being filled with images and the voices of journalists whom Israel kills and incites against. The world must now take a step forward to hold the Israeli occupation accountable and stop the killing of civilians and journalists in Gaza," said Hisham Zaqout, an Al Jazeera correspondent in Gaza. The Al Jazeera Media Network on Monday condemned the killing of five of its staff by the Israeli army in Gaza. According to the network, the Israeli army killed its correspondents by attacking their tent in front of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on Sunday. The Israel Defense Forces claimed that one of them was affiliated with Hamas. In a statement, Al Jazeera described the attack as "another blatant and premeditated assault on press freedom." "This attack comes amid the catastrophic consequences of the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza, which has seen the relentless slaughter of civilians, forced starvation, and the obliteration of entire communities," the statement said, adding that the Israeli forces and government were responsible for "deliberately targeting and assassinating" its journalists. The network stressed that targeting its correspondents was a "desperate attempt to silence the voices exposing the impending seizure and occupation of Gaza." It called on the international community to take decisive measures to halt what it termed an "ongoing genocide" and end the deliberate targeting of journalists.
