Police find toilet used to produce cannabis-infused jellies after toddler was rushed to hospital from eating them
Police busted an illegal cannabis facility where toilets were used to make cannabis-infused jellies and cookies in Bangkok.
Officers raided the residential building in the Khlong Sam Wa District on Wednesday, after a two-year-old toddler was rushed to the hospital for eating the marijuana-laced edibles.
The goods were traced back to the property, which had been converted into a cannabis cultivation and processing hub.
Police said the facility had no permit to operate, and failed to meet hygiene standards. They seized 230 cannabis jellies, 162 cannabis cookies, 35 bags of dried cannabis buds each weighing 100 grams, and 54 cannabis plants with buds.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Chalerm Charoenhirunwanich of the Consumer Protection Police Division, said: 'We sent samples of the seized products to the Department of Medical Science, Ministry of Public Health, to confirm test results. If they contain pharmaceutical derivatives and narcotics, additional charges will be filed.'
Building caretaker Sutthipon, 22, allegedly admitted to growing and packing the cannabis plants. He said the dried cannabis buds were sold for 10,000 baht per 100 grammes, while cannabis jellies sold for 30 baht per piece and cookies for 150 baht each.
Authorities said the cannabis production allegedly violated the Food Act of 1979 for 'producing and selling incorrectly labelled food'. The penalty for the offence is a minimum fine of 30,000 baht.
If drugs or any contaminants harmful to health are found, the products may be classified as adulterated food, which carries a penalty of imprisonment for up to two years, a fine of at least 20,000 baht, or both.
The factor also reportedly violated the Thai Traditional Medicine Protection and Promotion Act of 1999 for 'selling controlled herbs without permission'. The penalty includes imprisonment for up to one year, a fine not exceeding 20,000 baht, or both.
The raid was carried out after a two-year-old girl became unusually drowsy after eating colourful heart-shaped jellies. She was rushed to a hospital, where it was found she had eaten cannabis-tainted sweets.
Doctors diagnosed her with cannabis intoxication and acute sinusitis.
Thailand decriminalised marijuana in 2022, making it the first Asian nation to do so.
However, the lack of regulations caused a surge in unregulated sales and use, especially in tourist areas like Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya.

Government officials are now seeking to outlaw recreational cannabis use by requiring medical certificates to purchase the drug.
