[Voiceover] The Chikungunya outbreak in southern China's Guangdong Province is spurring sales of bug repellents as the number of cases of the mosquito born illness continues to rise. At this supermarket in Shenzhen, a variety of mosquito products are on offer, from mosquito coils to repellent bracelets, to electric mosquito zappers. Every few minutes, a shopper puts one in their cart. [Soundbite] Shopper: "Just use it when I go out. Lately, there's been a lot of mosquitoes." [Soundbite] Shopper: "There are mosquitoes buzzing around at night, so I need to plug in the electric repellent liquid." [Voiceover] The city hit hardest by the outbreak, Foshan, has upgraded its public health emergency response to level three representing a "relatively major" public health event. Pharmacists say they're seeing an increase in people coming in to ask for protection. [Soundbite] Pharmacy staff member: "We've stocked up two to three times as much as usual. Sales have been particularly strong recently. We restock about three times a week." [Voiceover] Fever and joint pains are the most common symptoms of Chikungunya but headaches, muscle pain, joint swelling and rashes have also been reported. Health officials say cases of long-term complications and death are rare and are usually connected to pre-existing health problems. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
