SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA, US - AUGUST 14: Hundreds of demonstrators wearing red gathered at Santa Cruz Main Beach, California on Thursday, Aug 14, for the "Let Gaza Swim" protest, forming a human "Red Line" in solidarity with Palestinians enduring Israel’s blockade and military assault on Gaza.
The peaceful demonstration, organized to highlight the denial of basic rights in Gaza, saw participants line the shoreline near the Santa Cruz Boardwalk at 6 p.m.
Organizers stated, "The people of Gaza are cut off from food, medicine, safety, shelter, fishing—and even swimming. Today, we stand together to draw a red line for humanity."
The event began with a prayer and moment of silence led by an Indigenous Mono tribal member before protesters formed the symbolic red line along the beach.
Since October 2023, Israel’s military offensive has killed more than 61,700 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, while destroying critical infrastructure and collapsing the healthcare system.
A worsening famine has pushed Gaza into catastrophe, with the Health Ministry reporting four more starvation-related deaths in the past day, raising the total to 239, including 106 children. Harrowing images show emaciated civilians, some too weak to stand after months of extreme hunger and dehydration.
Despite global calls for a ceasefire, Israel continues its assault, leaving over two million Palestinians in urgent need of food, water, and medical aid.
