Flash floods cause road chaos in Chattanooga, Tennessee
Credit: Chattanooga Fire Department /Cover Images Flash flooding hit Chattanooga in Tennessee on Tuesday and Wednesday (12 and 13 August 2025) after heavy rainfall left vehicles stranded in deep water near Chattanooga, officials have said. Footage posted online by emergency services staff showed cars attempting to drive through floodwaters on an interstate near the city. In some areas, the water was so deep that only the roofs of vehicles could be seen above the murky surface. The Interstate 24 was closed for several hours on Tuesday evening. Rae Anne Bradley, regional communications officer for the Tennessee Department of Transportation in Chattanooga and the Cumberland Plateau, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that eastbound lanes reopened at around 22:00 local time after the water had receded. Westbound lanes reopened on Wednesday after crews removed vehicles left stranded by the flooding.
