[Voiceover] Tourists to southern China’s tropical Hainan island province might notice a strange object patrolling the beaches. A beach cleaning robot has been undergoing trials in Sanya City, helping sanitation workers remove trash that’s buried deep in the sand. Resembling a Zamboni- the machine used to smooth out ice in a rink- the driverless beach version uses treads to move on the sand. Researchers from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Hainan Research Institute, who developed the machine, have nicknamed it "beach dog". Developers say the device collects garbage in four steps - plowing, shaking, dropping, and flattening. [Soundbite] Tan Changxiao, post graduate student, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Hainan Research Institute: "Plowing means that the comb-shaped teeth can plow out all garbage. Shaking means separating the garbage from the sand by shaking the sieve mesh. Dropping means putting garbage into a collection case and flattening means using a rake to flatten the holes." [Voiceover] Tan said the robot can recharge itself using solar power and can clean around 2,000 square meters per hour [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
